South African businesses are overpaying on courier costs by up to 30 times. DeliverAI publishes the daily cheapest courier on every domestic lane
An analysis of 4,303 rate snapshots across 26 SA couriers over the past seven days shows the most expensive courier charges 30× more than the cheapest on the same 2 kg domestic parcel. DeliverAI is opening this dataset for any business to use.
Johannesburg · 28 June 2026
The headline number
Sending a 2 kg parcel from Johannesburg to Cape Town this week ranged from R 40 with the cheapest courier to R 1,267 with the most expensive — a 30× spread for identical pickup and delivery on the same day. Every business that ships parcels in South Africa is choosing from this spread, mostly without knowing it exists.
It is a transparency story. The cheapest courier and the most expensive courier in our data often deliver to the same address in the same number of days. The R 1,200 difference is not buying you faster delivery — it is buying you the absence of a price comparison.
Top five domestic lanes ranked by overpayment risk
Past seven days, 2 kg parcels, domestic only, sourced from 4,303 live rate snapshots across 26 couriers tracked by DeliverAI:
| Lane | Cheapest | Most expensive | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Johannesburg → Cape Town | R 40 | R 1,267 | 30× |
| Cape Town → Knysna | R 49 | R 1,542 | 30× |
| Durban → Richards Bay | R 49 | R 1,462 | 29× |
| Johannesburg → Bloemfontein | R 49 | R 1,346 | 27× |
| Durban → Pietermaritzburg | R 45 | R 1,068 | 23× |
Why this matters for businesses
A small e-commerce store shipping 200 parcels a month on the Johannesburg–Cape Town lane could be spending anywhere from R 8,000 to R 253,000 per month on courier fees alone — for the same parcels going to the same customers. Without a comparison source, most businesses default to one or two couriers and never test the gap.
DeliverAI publishes the cheapest, fastest and most reliable courier on every domestic lane, updated daily, free to use. Businesses can use the public API or copy and paste into their own checkout — no signup required for the free tier.

Methodology
DeliverAI runs daily rate captures across 20 fixed South African routes at three weight bands (1 kg, 2 kg, 5 kg) against 26 couriers. Live captures use the couriers' own public rate APIs where available; the rest are pulled from their published rate cards. Every figure in this release is reproducible — the underlying CSV is available at /data/sa-courier-pricing-2026.json.
